Chapter 19

The family erupted with joy when Matthew’s fever broke. Faith and love filled Uncle Preston’s home. Ruth Ann no longer needed to be strong for her immediate family now that they were surrounded by an abundance of strength. How good to simply rest in it.

There was a world of need beyond the serenity of home, but Ruth Ann had no intention of reentering the world anytime soon. What she’d been through the past week, the past year, had earned her seclusion.

Matthew had other ideas. No sooner had he opened one eye than he was telling her what to do. “Annie, you need to pack. You and Beulah get yourselves to the World’s Fair.”

Ruth Ann was alone in the room with her brother and she was prepared to scold him. But his aged face and sagging left side of his lip kept her in check. “You’re delirious. I’m not leaving you and Mama right in the middle of—”

“I’m thinking of the Choctaw Tribune.”

His hand slipped beneath the covers and he slowly pulled out a folded newspaper. The Dickens Herald. Ruth Ann gasped at the sight of it. Matthew had asked for news on what their rival paper printed about the shooting, but the family agreed to bar such requests until he was stronger. Even Ruth Ann hadn’t seen the latest edition. She snatched it and flipped it open. “Did Peter…”

She read the headline and cried.
